How To Fit A Sink Waste

Basin wastes, a vital but often overlooked component of the bathroom, allow you to fill your basin with water and then empty it when you are done.

Basin wastes can now be purchased in many different designs. We've created a quick 'how to' guide to show you how simple it is to fit a basin waste.

Why should you replace your basin waste?

Although you may not have thought much about your basin waste, it could have a negative impact on the style of your bathroom. It is possible for limescale and black mold to form in wastes. This can make it difficult to get rid of.

Even rust can be a problem in some cases. This is not a good look for a space where cleanliness and order are important. If a deep clean is not enough, it's worth getting a new basin to dispose of the waste.

Older wastes, especially those with traditional pop-up waste basins, are more susceptible to mechanical failures. We recommend replacing the waste with a modern click clack.

You can make your bathroom look more appealing by replacing the basin waste. A matching basin waste in matte black can be a great way to complement your new matte black taps and give you style points.

How to Get Rid of Old Basin Waste

How to install from scratch? Skip to How to Fit Waste.

You'll need:

* A bucket.

* A set of pliers.

* A clean cloth.

* An optional screwdriver

1. You must turn off your water supply

This is a precautionary measure that will ensure your bathroom doesn't flood. Turn off the water supply valve to your bathroom (found underneath the sink).

2. Get Rid of Your Basin Trap

Place the bucket directly under the trap of your basin. Next, use your pliers and gently loosen the trap from your waste until it is easy to remove manually. After the trap has been removed, you will need to secure its rubber seal.

3. Get rid of your waste

Next, remove the large hexagonal lock that secures your waste to the basin. Next, take out the rubber seal that secures the waste to the basin. You may need to gently pry the silicone seal off if it was thick.

4. Cleanup

Use a hot, damp cloth to remove any silicone residue.

Five Easy Steps to Fit a Basin Waste

You'll need:

* A suitable basin waste (if in doubt, refer to our guide to basin refuses).

* A silicone sealant gun.

* High quality silicone sealant.

1. The Basin

Although it might seem insignificant, it is vital to ensure that your basin is clean and dry before installing. This will ensure a watertight seal.

2. Get ready to dispose of your waste

If your waste was assembled as shown in the image below, unscrew the hexagonal nuts and take out the rubber washer.

3. Align Your Waste

Insert your waste carefully into the basin's cutout. If you are using a slotted basin waste, align the slot with the basin's overflow.

4. Sealing Time

Apply silicone to the thread of your waste, making sure it sits flush with the basin. Use your sealant gun to push the silicone into the spaces between the waste and the basin.

5. Attach the trap

Use the rubber washer to push sealant into the gaps. The hexagonal nut should be fastened to the waste. Make sure you apply pressure to the top of the waste to prevent it spinning. Attach the waste to the bottle trap. Before using, check for leaks.

Did you follow our guide? Congratulations! You should now be the proud owner a brand new, fully functional basin waste. Maybe a basin tap replacement might be next? To learn more about the process, take a look at our basin tap replacement guide.
